im having a brown algae problem in my new 75, its about a month old. the problem started about a week ago so bought some geos to take care of the problem but that did help. so my question is what fish/product should i get to rid me of this algae problem. im not sure but i think my firemouths have something to do with the geos not sifting the sand cause when i see the geo about to do it a firemouth chasses him away. ill have 2 pictures 1st with out flash, 2nd with.

also, my friend had this same problem and he got some geos and then fixed it up, so i did the same thing but got a different kind of geo. is it my breed? should i take them back and get different ones?

Howdy,

First off, to comment on a couple of previous replies: Instead of chemical filtration I recommend testing the water first and if necessary increasing water changes.

Second, do you have any catfish or trumpet snails? Even Corydoras nicely plow thru the sand and turn the top layer over all the time. That brings sand grains with algae below the surface, away from light, and algae die. With the next round, these grains are clean again and are plowed to the top.

yea id start manually turning the substrate at least. MTS might be useful as harley said

i dont see no brown algae

just fish ****!

Is brown algae caused by light, if I am mistaked it is caused by silica because brown algae is diatoms. Do you top off the tank with tap water? You may be adding silica to the water. I would do a water change and then get something that will keep the sand moving.

yeah i use tap water to fill my tank. i got the qeos to shift the sand, which should keep it moving but they dont shift the sand
