brown algae?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What fish are in your tank? I'd like to hear the list as there are snails that will effectively eat the algae although they will need to be supplemented with algae wafers and extra algae supply once their algae supply becomes scarce. Horned nerites (Clithon corona) have spines that will deter most predators but I'm not sure about them with black lancer catfish.

(3) 7" Geophagus "Orangehead"
(4) 3-4" Geophagus Altifrons "Rio Tocantins"
(1) 5" Hypostemus (sp?)
lots of MTS, maybe 50 or so. and a few snails I got from a local river, they have the shape of MTS, but are shorter and more round like 3/4" round.

lots of manzanita wood, approx 120w of lighting all around 8000K rating, lights are on for about 14hrs. which is long but I'm waiting on my timer to arrive so that will be fixed. You think if I set the timer to turn off for about one hr in the middle of the day will help??? I know a lot of people with planted tanks do that to help control green algae.

The Black Lancer is in another tank

Brown algae is not the same as the green. Your fish seem okay with the horned nerites. Are you ready to try some? PM Arakkis in Aquariacentral.com as he sells several of these but you want the horned ones as they are not easily touched by any fish. Nerites are very docile. Supplement them with algae wafers and extra algal growth. They will effectively eat almost any algae (minus the BGA which is a cyanobacteria). They will lay white eggs around your tank but the eggs will not hatch as these need the various salinity in order to do so. Supplement them with calcium as well by dropping a calcium pill or two in the tank or try dosing with Kent's liquid calcium.

Thanks Lupin, I'll talk to Arakkis tomorrow.
