Ive kept these a few times in the past but never more than a few months then id release them into my pond. Ive caught them up to 18-20" before and ive seen 17-19" as max size on multiple site but whats realistic in an aquarium? ive got a 65 to start and a 150 in storage for later. Fed good and clean water, whats the avg max size in captivity?

There's really not too much info out there on these guys long term in captivity. Hopefully someone who has real world experience will speak up.

I have 60 of them and they are growing extremely fast, they range in size from 6-12 inches. They were all a lot smaller when I caught them a few months ago. I want to see how big they grow to as well before I put them in my pond.

I had a pet brown bullhead for over 12 years that just passed away around a year ago. The biggest he got was aprox. 13". I caught him at about an inch long in a minnow trap. By the end of the first year housed in his aquarium he could be hand fed without any skiddish behavior what so ever. Ill have to dig up a pic for you guys.

To my knowledge, biggest bullhead in the captivity was a 18" brown but that was a wild caught...then again I knew someone that has kept a 16" yellow bullhead in the aquarium since the bullhead was a 2". IMO I would think you are better off keeping adult bullheads in 150-220gal tanks.

MN Rebel, do you have any data on growth rates? I know these types of fish are right up your alley.

Man mine ate like a pig. And grew super slow. Seriously. Like comparable to clown loaches.
