If going just by the tail, Ameiurus catus North American White Catfish belonging to the genus of bullheads http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=263 has a forked tail also, albeit not as deeply forked as the channel's.
Still, the fish strikes my eye as a channel indeed but a good side shot would settle it.
