did you honestly just suggest that he turn the fish hes had for a long time loose? thats illegal! there are probably over 100 threads that explain this. the fish could transport diseases and disease the fish in the water in which you freed it. it is highly illegal DONT DO IT.
dude. its the guys personal pond.. thats why he said "my pond" and my guess is that its probly isolated if he lets the bullhead loose in the summer and brings it in in the winter

Because brown bullheads are awesome and he didn’t think about it needing to winter. You should put it back in the pond, maybe put it in a rubber made tube and slowly add water from the pond to the tube until it’s full. And then set it free so that it may winter and spawn sometime during April through June. The female would lay eggs in a shallow hole with her strapping man caring for the eggs by her side. After the young hatch, both mother and father look after the kids. Do you really want to mess that up?

Or just keep it in the tank. That’s what I would do.:WTF:
mabey the pond is fairly small so it freeses solid. dont be so quick to flame ppl. thats the type of **** that gives MFK a bad name..

to OP try putting a few worms in there over night. another possibility is boiled beef heart. my bullhead goes nuts for it. well good luck :)

its a native fish so yes he can release it, it also probaly came from a public waterway. and any body of water that has bullheads will have no problem supporting another one, they are diseased filled fish and it wouldnt hurt anything to release it.... Its not an invasive and its native. thats like saying my channel cat outgrew my tank and if i put it into a pond it would cause massive disease and kill everything..... not gonna happen.

anyways other than my rant. your bullhead sounds like it is having the same trouble some of my fish have had, they put on their feed bag to get fat for winter and go dormant. maybe try to warm the water alittle bit and put some feeders in the tank with it, so if it gets hungry it has food in the tank with it... i had a bullhead from outside that over winter only ate a handfull of goldfish, then when it started warming up again he was back to normal

watch out pendog.....

wow is it just me or you guys totally misleading what the OP had to said.

i agree with pendog about the releaseing of native fish to native waters. I would be more concerned about bringing in a native fish then letting one out thats been in a controled environment.

now for the bullhead if you want him to eat you need to up the temp. bullheads are a warmwater fish, i dont catch them here in MI till summer when the waters warm i fish for them in the spring but have yet to catch one.

Old thread, but while I'm here...bullhead don't "winterize" at 70F, my bullhead lives at 70F and eats fine not to mention that you can catch them about as soon as the ice thaws and the water ain't no 70F in March or April, least not in NY. Though the problem has likely been resolved by now I would venture to guess the issue has to do with water quality more than anything else. And as for releasing a native fish back into the wild, under no circumstance is it advisable, there is no such thing as a truly controlled environment. If you don't want the fish for the duration of its life don't take it home, its that simple.

However it is not right to release AQUARIUM fish into the waterways, even if they are native to that area as nobody like to take any advice from a guy who toss any fish thats outgrow their tank into a pond. Bullhead are not always warmwater but do fine in the winters. Ive caught lots of bullheads during ice fishing.
