Its always fun for me to see someone elses newly found treasures :) Ive been keeping darters now for about 6 months or so and throughly enjoy them, i have a few different species in a 40 breeder, and they all co-exist nicely. I dont think you got hustled at all, I enjoy lots of species that i have no other means to come by other than to get them from a vendor. I have dealt with Paul on several occasions at sachs, and find him to be very helpful, honest, and as far as im concerned fair in his pricing. Of course if i could catch all the fish i want i would never buy any at all, but Value is in the eye of the beholder. Perhaps if some of the more fortunate Native keepers were willing to just go out and scoop up a few and send them to us we wouldnt have to buy so many . Good luck with your new darters, and i highly reccommend Paul Sachs.

Thats the problem with darters and small sunfish . There are only a few people that carry them. Its easier to find exotic fish than darters.

Few months back I was by the Glades and found shallaw ,algae covered pond LOADED with Everglaes tiny sunfish but had no way of bringing them back as was herping had no bucket.
Its few hours away but plan to return this spring.

Yes Paul is a good guy . My concern was it was 86 degrees here that day . No real winter in S.Florida and most inept post office in USA thus tricky ordering darters but they made it just fine.

You can also try BTDarters, and Jonahs has some occasionally, also keep an eye on Aquabid. Sometimes there are folks on there that you can question (send a message) in the native fish section, that have darters or access to them and will help you that way. Also you can sometimes post a wanted add in a few of the forum classifieds, its a slow process coming by native fish in general that folks are just jumping up and down to send you but be patient, and they will come. I have been quite fortunate finding fish if you just look around. :naughty:

What type darters do you keep ? Have any ever bred?

I just added plants to tank as read they like planted areas in hopes of breeding them.
I had variegated darters yrs ago but never bred. I hope to breed these .

I feed them mosquito larvae (leave glass in yard few days later loaded with mosquito) and black worms .

I would love to trigger spawning .

Swamp darters and nice ones to.

I recently saw jewel cichlid fry in feeder minnow tanks at lfs here but darters never.

do swamps stay smaller than browns?

I want some!! Are they good community fish? They remind me of my gobies the way they sit up. Where would one find darters?

They are inoffensive fish that wont bother other fish but they do chase each other just like gobies you kept.
Gobies are cuter IMO as their heads are round while darters are elongated .

I love the tiny bumble bee gobies. What type do you keep?

Darters prefer unheated tank but temps in 70s are fine for some like swamp and mud darters.
There are lots darter types and some have striking colors (the males) . Mine are still tiny but growing and showing spots.

I got mine from http://www.aquaculturestore.com/fwverts.html
as pet stores usually dont carry them but http://jonahsaquarium.com/JonahSite/fishlist.htm and http://www.btdarters.com/pages/pricelist.html carry them also and all honest people.

Most here collect their own and your area might have them but here in my area in mid Feb its 86 degrees thus not darter country lol.
