I hear of people on here who dont clean their FX5 for months at a time. I was wondering why i have to clean mine out every 1 to 2 weeks because of brown junk everywhere inside the filter. I also have the same problem in the Rena xp3. 75% water changes per week. I must be doing somthing wrong. Iv seen people on here with much heavier bioloads and not have problems with this.

Tank peramiters
125 gallon, 1 12inch pbass, 1 8 inch pbass, 1 9 inch oscar
Nitrate 10ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Amonnia 0ppm
Phosphate 1ppm
ph 6.5

umm i get that once a month.. my water inside the bucket get black.. i dink it just the poop and all that combine and it gett dirty..u might want to a sump to help out the FX5?? i dunoz

Brown algae ? Got pics ? I wouldn't alter your filtration I am sure there is an easier solution.

Sounds like it's just fish sh*t. It builds up in every filter, that's kinda what they do. In mine it's red because I mostly feed my fish Hikari gold pellets. Is it building up to the point where it's slowing the flow?

i feed mostly hikari gold twice a day. morning and night. it cuts the flow in the fx5 in half. i gravel vac every week with the water change.

it's poo

I wouldn't feed fish that size twice a day. Cut them back to once a day and get bio-gold. Less feeding and you shouldn't have to clean the filter as much.

is it normal to spend 2 - 2.5 hours cleaning the tank per week?
Thats about the time I spend on my 90 so yeah.... I would think so.

However I am still not fully convinced your fish create enough waste to clog an FX5 AND ?! An XP3 especially if your nitrates are at 10 ppm.

If you could provide a picture im sure we could tell if it was fish detritus or some kind of algae.
Furthermore how much water are you changing weekly ?
