brown junk in filters PLEASE HELP

You'd be far better off getting the gravel OUT of there and using sand. I've got 3 FX5's and used to clean them out religiously every week. That was overkill and I was wasting my time. Then I started cleaning them out every month and they were no dirtier than once a week. Now I clean them out every few months and they're *still not hardly dirty at all. The reason is I have sand in all my tanks and I syphon the bottom religiously every week with their water changes. (I've got Oscars). Gravel holds WAY too much gunk, there's no way to get your bottom clean with all that stuff sitting down in the gravel.

i also have sand the circulation picks up most of the stuff i just started using a battery siphon hooked up to a bucket so well see how this works out

I only open up my fx5 every 6 months which is on my 125g...but, I also have on there an AC 110 which I clean out monthly and a Fluval U4...fluval submersible, in addition to a uv sterilzer w/powerhead. In the filters I have the regular foam, carbon, bioballs, purigen, etc

Lots of driftwood in the tank as well. Actually a lot, thus the purigen

I have so much filtration because of the overstock and increased feeding and poo as this is the grow out tank....

I just cleaned out the crud out of my sump after a year, and the overflows...

I don't stress too much over the crud. I mainly just look to see how the fish are doing, then decide if I want to tackle the filtration
