Brown or Black sand?

all personal choice. i do know that with some fish, having dark sand or gravel will make the fish darken more than normal. i have also seen fish in white sand that looked very washed out. fish tend to get their truest colors when they are in a natural looking tank.

Especially Bichirs look too dark on black sand.

i have a mix of brown tan and buff. it looks nice and natural but i wish it was darker. i think 2:1 or 3:1 brown would have looked great.

Having said that i would go with brown.
