Brown trout...swallowed hook!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats a nice looking trout. That poor little fish by it, his face is priceless! :ROFL:looks like he is looking at the other one all scared, lol. Thats wrong, Im sorry.

Yeah Id say if you cant even see the hook anymore, then... I dont know, eat it. If you grab him and open his mouth up wide you cant see it anywhere? I dont remember the first post, but are you sure it didnt fall out when you cut the line or anything?

Edit:
Ok I re read it, lol um and you said you tried to take it out. Is it in your tank somewhere? maybe... with some good luck, he got it out of his mouth and its on the bottem of your tank

I understand your point of view, but I wasn’t out looking for a trout, just small sunfish. I just happen to catch a trout (my first one, did not even know they swam there), and a big one. I would have release it, have it not swallowed the hook….just like the title of the thread: Brown trout swallowed hook. I wanted to know if there was anything I can do to help. I also realized that I could not release it back once I released it into my tank. To be honest, I did not know what to do, so I brought it home. Keeping a trout was never my intension…just how things turned out.

I clipped line back near the water when in was still inside my net. I released it into a underwater net cage to see if it would be ok. It just sat there for 30 minutes and did nothing. I could not wait any longer and it was time for me to go. I am almost positive it did not fall out.

As for the trout, it survived the night, and is more active today. No it has not eating yet.

good luck i hope it proves all the ney sayers wrong...

..personally tho i release eveyrthing i catch.

I kno i have caught bass more then once with a mono leader hanging out of their anus. Obviously people cut the line. Prolly wasnt the gold hooks tho.

Switch to non coated circle hooks, a little less likely to gut hook a fish and if you do it still has a chance to corrode out.

Brown Trout are a true coldwater fish; LMB is a warmwater fish, that can live in colder temps. LMB is in this part of the forum because it is an NA Native not because it is a coldwater fish. You will not be able to find a temp that is optimal for both fishes.

Brown trout prefer 55-65 and LMB prefer 75-85. There isn't a happy medium for these to fish. They will probably both be able to live if you split the difference but both fish will not have optimal conditions and will not thrive.

almost need a chiller to keep a trout healthy, that is without the hook being swallowed

the temp problem is true, and i cant beleive this hasnt been brought up yet, but brown trout and lmb get huge. Browns can get 40 inches and lmb get close to that. If the trout was in really bad condition, or even kinda bad trout aren't very hardy fish, and it would have died the first day or at least shown signs of sickness, like very heavy breathing for a long time, or swimming in circles. plus it has been said that this fish will not adapt to tank life, i do not agree, with a big enough tank, and right conditions, (not so in this case, this is a stocked fish that lived in a cement block for the first two or three years of its life being fed pellets. with the right conditions i think it could definatly survive. But in this case i will have to say, stick with the bass and "sunnies" eat the trout.

I am not going to eat it, euthanize it, nor release it. It’s under my care now, and I am ready to do whatever is needed to insure its survival (if it can survive being hooked internally, or just having a hook inside its body all together). I have learned my lesson, next time I’ll just cut the line and let it go.

The brown trout is amongst the few that can live in the mid 70s, not ideal, but still possible. The temperature on the tank is at 68-72. I believe it will suffice for now. If the brown trout continues to improve, then I’ll transfer it to my outdoor pond which is much colder especially this time of year, with plenty of room, and minnows for it to eat.

I’ll continue my research to see if I can setup an oasis for it inside my home before the summer’s heat wave comes back around...but maybe I am look too far ahead into the future...for tomorrow is uncertain for my dog-paddling little friend.

Thanks for the replies and/or support.

my feelings are partially mixed on this one being that the tank should be chilled depending on where you got it from there are some trout in bass ponds but if you got this trout from a river and are not mimicking the enviorment you took it from you dont have a good chance with it and consider the fact he swallowed the hook i myself dont really like keeping fish wild caught because your not helping the fish out a bit, if oyu really want to keep this fish then you are looking at 300 gallon tank with maybe 2 to 3 trout and crayfish and other stuff with about 4 power heads on one side to mimic their envioment with big rocks for them to hide from current and stuff as well as a chiller

jsut my 2 cents
