I caught a 4 in. Brown water snake on the Chesapeake last summer, as he was about to go in water where I was jiggin' 6 in. Wide crabs and would have been minced a second later anyway. I brought him back to New York and have been keeping him since last august. He eats feeder minnows and mollies (I breed them for food for the other fish and him), his name is Dagon (anyone familiar with HP Lovecraft will catch that) he is feisty, isn't one for being handled but loves being petted. (He's a little over a foot now)

I've never talked to another person who kept one so any input on the best way to keep him would be great, or any other tidbit I should know of keeping water snakes.

I currently have him in a 30 ga, with a large water bowl that he feeds and swims around in. I've been thinking about doing a paladrium setup for him, but don't know if a water snake will do good with live plants haha

The second is a bit older then the first, haven't changed his setup in a long time as not to stress

Probably best thoughts I have on this. If you were honestly going to try making a paludarium I'd look at the environment the snake was caught from and mimic that much as possible.

My point exactly, he was caught in the Chesapeake marshes on the peninsula, right by the boat dock at the house I was staying at, so I figure tall thin grasses, maybe an ivy in the water to suck out nitrates (I don't think snakes are sensitive to this, if I'm wrong let me know). Make a nice lurk area to grab the fish at.

I'll take pics of the complete setup when I get home from work around 11, I'll have them up by tomorrow.

Haha nice, the big ones are mean, one got into my kayak while I was fishing on the Chesapeake in the marshes and it bit me like 4 times before I got it out. They don't latch on to warm blooded things in my experience just kind of nip you, the adult in my kayak barely broke skin and my own hasn't ever broken skin, just kind of hit me with an open mouth

You guys must have little sissy watersnakes... Ours bite, and "chew". They make you want to get bit less.

I don't know about the local area I'm at now, but back on OK if it was in the water and a snake. 90% of the time it was venomous decently long and mean as hell.
