Bruce Lee's unnoticed movements

by the way, I've never heard that a gracie will be offended if you tell them jiu jitsu originated from japan

I always thought the gracies are very educated in where their jj comes from. I've never heard of a gracie claiming that they "invented" jj.

the gracies actually started calling it gracie jiu jitsu in the beginning because they were taking the judo that they learned from the Japanese judoka and tweeking it to their needs and what they saw fit. but as it grew in popularity and more people began to study and learn it, you couldn't call it gjj anymore since people were learning from others who are not associated or trained by the gracies. therefore calling it bjj was more accurate.

there is now American jj, it's all the same, just minor techniques that have been tweeked to suit the people using it.

btw, ken flo is Kenny florian's nick name. it's not his "own" style of fighting. I've never heard of this before

In reference to the $5000 a fight number, I would be THRILLED to be able to make $5000 in 25 minutes.

well, you are not considering the roughly two months of training. cost of nutrition, gym access, trainer fees and things like that. you and one cornerman fly free to your fight (at least in the UFC, unless I'm wrong. I don't think all orgs do this, only the major ones), if you want more to corner you, it's from your own pocket

so $5k isn't all yours. and after considering all the cost of being a fighter, let alone the living cost of your family outside of fighting, $5k doesn't sound all that great.

I was looking at it from the point of view of an amateur or semipro that's just trying to make their break. Most of those guys that are juuuuust at that level that they might break into the pros that I know still have day jobs. Keep in mind that I'm in the Army- we have the largest population of MMA guys per capita than any random civilian population. The on post Combatives programs normally work extensively with the crossfit and MMA guys out in the community. Hell, I'm not even that into MMA and I've probably got more mat time than 98% of this site. That's not to say I think I could compete at any level, mind you, just an observation of fact.

there are a lot of pros that still have a full time job. Michael McDonald who fought for Barao's title is a carpenter. Eddie Wineland, the guy that just lost to Barao a couple of weeks ago is a full time fireman. Shane Carwin was an engineer while he was interim champ I think.

I'm glad to know that the US armed forces have incorporated mma into their combat training. Not all who serve are built like line backers so mma is a good thing to learn if you're a woman or a scrawny dude. I think it would prepare you fairly well in a real life hand to hand combat situation

That's the Army's logic on hand to hand as well. I actually got to witness a 110 pound female tap out a muscle bound 6', 220 pound dude one time. He was one of those arrogant muscle head guys who didn't take training seriously. Talk about a chance for MAD crap talking! Just goes to show good technique really helps against raw strength. TUF 16 was actually won by an active duty staff sergeant.

One of the main things I'm going to miss about getting out of the army is doing combatives. Most civilians have no interest in it, where as in the army it is quite easy to find a chance and in fact it is often required that you roll.
