Brute trash can sump?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you all for the advice, just wanted to update and share I am now part of the trash can filter club.

I am still tweaking a few things here and there but I can already tell this will be a much better setup to maintain and also much much quieter!

I kept all my media and threw it inside to keep the cycle. Also added like two gallons worth of ceramic rings to start seeding - this way I can eliminate the sponges after a few months for easier maintenance.

Lastly I added a 1250gph circulation pump on the other end of the tank. This has made a huge difference eliminating all dead spots in the tank without being too strong. My substrate has never been cleaner

Thanks again!

Have you done the all important power outage test to see whether your tub can handle the overspill from your display tank? It's always a comfort to know your floor isn't going to get wet if the power goes out or your pump malfunctions.

Would love to see a layer diagram.
Its pretty simple:

the overflow box on top has two pre filters that catch the bigger stuff ( very coarse sponge), then it drains into the sock filters (for my main mechanical), and then I just let the water spill inside the bucket were I have all my bio media. Finally, it hits the pump and it goes back I to the tank.

Oh yeah, I had a sump spill over once so I made sure not to have a repeat. My wife would kill me.

I put a hole very high on the return to break the siphoning in case power goes out or while I do maintenance.

The bucket only fills up to like 65 or 70% so still a lot of room.
