i know the availability of oxygen in the aquarium is very important, especially when dealing with "monster fish". i know the actual bubbles from air pumps dont actually add oxygen to the water, its the movement at the surface that creates the exchange. My question is why use bubble wands and stuff, which totally make the aquarium look unnatural, when anyone could easilly position there outflow of there filters to accomplish this, i do it in all my tanks and the filter output makes far more surface agitation than a bubble wand could ever do, so why use bubbles and a loud pump. is it that people just dont know and think you must have bubbles. seems like a useless piece of equipment to me, so, anyone have another opinion or comments? and i can totally understand battery pumps for when the power goes out, but otherwise, i dont understand

I like the look of it. Plus in my opinion I think that most fish enjoy them, I've kept lots of different fish over the years and I find that a lot of them liked hanging out near/ over/ ontop of the bubble wands.

I never thought of that.

yeah i only ever keep them in smaller tanks (like 10-20g) i like the look of them in the smaller tanks but in the larger tanks its just to much lol but i have also found that the fish i keep actually like to hang out under or around it like meghan said but mine also play in it as well (swim into it, let it carry them up then swim down through the bubbles and repeat its quite hilarious lol)

Not eveyone uses the same setup as you - when bubbles hit the surface they DO create surface aggitation which aids in the transfer of nitra. In combonation with overhead filtration and/or powerheads the bubbles are forced into the water creating tons of oxygen. Whisper's new design is extemely quite unlike the old school pumps from yesteryear. The same pumps are also used in combo to run other aquaria devices such as some protien skimmers, bottom siffons, some undergravel filtration systems,etc... Bubble makers are even more so important if you have surface breathing pets such as frogs, turtles, crabs, as it creates surface oxygen in the tank opposed to a nitra trapped enviorment under the lid. It's also not uncommon to see Bichirs, Wolfish, Plecos, and others; go up to the surface and get a gulp of that benifical air.

Another reason that is overlooked sometimes, if the power goes out and your HOB/canister/whatever filter you use fails to re-start, at least there are air bubbles agitating the surface when the power comes back on. :)
