Buddy Caught a Sturgeon in the Deleware

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just did a research paper on the shortnose and one of the ways to help protect the species is angler awareness. So now that you know what it is I think next time you wont let it leave the water, also keep an eye out and educate other anglers so this dosnt happen again ;-).

Obviously now that I know they're listed as endangered both by the state as well as the federal government I'll handle the situation a bit differently from now on. I wouldn't be too worried though. Like I said the release was smooth and the fish swam off quite quickly under its own power. All is well with the world.

Great to see someone caught one!
Thanks for sharing. I am sure the fish is fine, its hard to take a fish off the hook in the water anyway. They are so cool, I love their armor plates. Kinda like a niger cat, very prehistoric

Glad to know they are still in the Delaware. They are a hardy fish - been around millions of years unchanged. At least you realized it was rare and left it go without having to be told. You cannot predict what is going to take your bait when fishing. We should all become a little familiar with the protect species anywhere we fish.

very interesting thread thanks for posting

Hey guys, just posting this because it was pretty interesting to see. We were fishing directly under the Burlington - Bristol Bridge for catfish and my buddy reeled in a short-nose sturgeon. He / she was 25" and 4lbs on the dot with our cheap scale. From what I understand they're pretty rare. I'll have pics later tonight after work :)

You should tell your buddy to turn it in to the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame. They have "Kept Records" as well as "Catch and Release Records".
