ive had budgies years ago but they never lived more than 5 years at a time. i have some questions about them. soon i will get 2. should i get a nest for them? how often should i feed them millet?there is some exposed metal from sanding off rust on the bars of the cage-is this dangerous? should i paint over it with non toxic paint?
any help would be appreciated, thank you.
Kind of odd longevity, you should have kept them alive well into their teens:confused: Make shure you give them a big cage, lots of branches of non toxic wood, a nest would be good, protect them against air corrents and cold, dont feed them letuce, doble chek that toxic paint thing, give them regularity fruits like apple , dont expose them to insectisides and buy them from a local breeder not from a pet shop. OH and buy a good book about them. That should greatly increase your budgies life:D Dont forget to select young healty birds and preferably get more than 2, 3 copples would be ideal. They are social animals, they need others to talk to like we need other people:)

If you are planning on getting a male and a female then yes get them a nest. If you are going to get 2 males or 2 females then no. Keep cuttlebone in the cage at all times, millit once a day (some like it too much then don't want to eat anything else which is not good obviously). If there is anything else you'd like to know feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help.
alright thanks. i dont know what to get because im getting two juveniles that are about 8 weeks old, but i should probably still get the nest right?

not really, budies average life span is from 5-10 years. oldest recorded budgie was 15 and that was probably in a free flying aviary. i was much younger and i didnt really care for them as much as i should have. now i've been researching and know a lot about them. thanks for all your help. what do you mean nontoxic wood? im going to buy mine from a petshop that gets theirs from a local breeder:naughty: i always get a green one and a blue one.

My grandparents had normal cage cage as well as aviary budgies and most lived more than 12 years so that is my "standart" as how much a well cared bird should live, wich fits in what I told you earlier;) Also if your getting juveniles get more than 2, in fact I wouldnt sugest buying unsexed individuals because later a buch endups without a pair wich is depressing to say the least for such social animals. They are cheap so there is no excuse for not getting several:grinno: You know how to sex them rigth?

Using non toxic wood means avoiding certain kinds of wood that have toxic agents in it wich can slowly kill your birds. Avoid all soft woods like pine and other coniferous trees. Avoid also peach, avocado and apple tree branches:grinno: Most hard woods like oak if not sprayed with pesticides will do:)

they might be cheap but im not getting sexed ones because theyre old. i want one to live as long as it possibly can with me. i dont know how to sex them, please explain, if it the brown cere blue cere thing i know that

They arent necessarily old ones:confused: also you should be able to see the diferences even in young ones, and yes males have blue cere and females have pinkish brown cere. If you are able to do that you can get to do some copples:popcorn:
