building a 1000 gal concrete block monster tank

awesome project going on here. i have played with this idea for a long time, just using a lighter construction method. yea, its way late but i only caught that this whole thing is sitting on a 4" slab. if this is the case have you verified that its adequate? something this heavy usually needs to bear on a grade beam or thickened slab.

Welcome. This is already discussed earlier in this thread, but it has a new 4" slab I poured which it's sitting on an existing 4"-6" slab on grade, which is sitting on a 24" footer. It's centered on the house's long axes which has the 24" footer running under it. Also as a side note, I had all of the concrete and blocks sitting on a 4" slab outside, both on pallets, so all of this weight was sitting on a 8' x 8' area and didn't comprimise the little 4" slab even with that point load.

in summary, this thing has about 32" of solid concrete on grade under 90% of it. You think that will hold it?
 
i wasnt concerned about the weight of the cmu, just the volume it will hold. yea, i guess i missed that along the way, though. i only remembered seeing something about a 4" existing slab and thought uh-oh. on a side note, im not that new around here.....been a member of predatoryfish for five years but never bothered re-registering after all the drama. anyway, it looks like ill be following this thread for a while.

I dont think that you really do need to do design calcs but i can try to solve any problems you run into.

I would just build it like it was a retaining wall.

Oh and about those calcs, those values are soooooo small they seem insignificant compared to what im used to working with.

Im building the frame for my tank out of 1/2" by 1/2" ASTM A36 steel, with a wall thickness around 0.125" and my axial capacity is close to 30000 lbs........

wall thickness? are you talking about structural angle iron? .125x.5x.5 angle is what they make 3 ton jackstands out of... everyone knows they hold a lot more.. ..however.. I prefer .1875x1.5x1.5 ..thicker sure, but I never worry and it looks super heavy duty.

by the way.. ASTM A36 is just hot-rolled mild steel.. nothing special about it.

So far everything is a go. I've got everyone due here at about 3:00pm EST. I've got 4 guys coming. Hopefully it goes quick. I'd love to be able to test fill it next weekend :headbang2 Stay tuned...
