building a 500 gallon plywood tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hope you are considering the massive weight of this unit you are building. If you are not on concrete under that carpet you will have problems. It would also be far better to remove the carpet under the stand to keep it more stable. a 500 gallon tank when up and running for fresh water will weight in excess of 4500 + lbs that is more then 2.5 tons. Salt water will even weight more. Just a thought.

yeah i had my house built in 2000 , its concrete , thanks for the tip , i do like everyone 2 cents , some are helpfull , nice just to see way other people think , just like the stand , i seen some use 4x4 and seen people use 2x6 and other ways , when i did my stand i wanted the front open much as i could and didnt want the bottom off the floor and i wanted the 1 side on stand open cause i can move wet dry filter in and out easy , thats my plan for the stand , and i talk to everone around me,, co workers and stuff , most says you need to do this and that , i allway say ,humm you build or read about plywood tank ans stands , they say no , and i think , why am i even listen to this lol anyway

stand up , now just double up the legs so the weight goes wood to wood , it take up 90 percent of iving room while building , i took week vacation to have time to do all this , yep what a vacation lol , but i had fun and enjoy planning and buiulding this in all , still very worry im not screwing it up , time will tell , it is what it is i guess

i have kinda 2 plans , i have a 125 gallon that was thinking about turning into filter system if i need a bigger one , but i have a 55 gallon that i plan on doing , if i need bigger i can do the 125

stans built,,, now the tank , my tank went with 3/4 sanded pine ,( 40 bucks a sheet at lows ) my tank needed 5 ,,,i went by garf sight 90 percent on how to make them , since they been making plywood tank for 20 years , only different i made from my tank is the top and the bottom of the tank is 1.5 inch wider then rest of the tank so to put the sides and everything up since im not using the end of the wood , i had to make lines and mark everthing out and mark for my pre drill , i went with 2 inch screw every 2 inchs
