Like the title said, I need to build a sump for my new 210g tank. I've never used sumps before and would like some advice on where to start. The tank has built in overflows and bulkheads on either side. Here is a picture. Thanks for the help.uploadfromtaptalk1389723336928.jpguploadfromtaptalk1389723352953.jpguploadfromtaptalk1389723366745.jpguploadfromtaptalk1389723400486.jpg both the over flows are identical.

Is the 210 drilled or has overflows?
If not, you'll need to deal with that first.
Then, you should figure out how many filter compartments you want to use and what kind of media.
Best is to draw it out on a piece of paper and get some measurements.
Then silicone in some glass dividers.
Make sure the tank is very clean and wipe down with alcohol. That way the silicone adheres good.
Then all you need is a return pump ; to return sump water back to the main tank.
This is just a basic way. I'm sure others have their own ways.

Sorry about that, this tank is drilled with 2 inlets and 2 outlets, 4 holes total, 2 in each overflow. It was manufactured as a "reef ready tank", but I'm using it as freshwater.

where to start is to go to the begenning of the DIY filter section and start reading every post with the word sump in the title. sure, it'll take a while, but when you're done you'll have a decent idea of how you want to go.
then figure how much you want to spend and how much effort you want to put into it. my sump is 60G and I spent $200 on just the media, but I expect it to last for a minimum of 10 years, and $20 a year doesn't seem as bad as $200 up front...
with your holes you can go with beananimal or durso style standpipes, from the pics it looks like they were running durso.
you can flow into one end of the sump and out the other, or into the middle and out both ends, you'll find examples of both in the posts.
cheapest/easiest would be pot scrubbies, and one pump. easiest but more expensive could be poret foam wedged into the tank as dividers, then you can start adding baffles and different media, multiple pumps, filter socks, etc.

Ok so I've read through a lot of diy sump threads, and I think I know what I'm going to do, the only thing I'm still having trouble with is how to figure out flow rate abd what size return pump I'll need.thanks for the help.

Just get a energy efficient pump that has a flow rate of roughly 2400gph. A bit more never hurts though. A turn over of ten times the total volume is highly desired. I have never used a laguna pump but I hear great things about them. I'm using a 2400gph pump i got at lowes, i think its a smart pond and its been faithful for years.

edit here is the sticky for matching a pump.

so this is what I think I have decided on, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoW97qy0E50, found this on youtube and I really like what this guy has going on. what are your thoughts on this.

I honestly think its cool and I like it but i advise you not to do it. That is a maintenance nightmare and there are so many better options. Some examples are filter socks, trickle systems, and just plain media in the sump divided by sponges, These are so many more effective and simple ways to do it and they get the job done just as well not if better.

I was thinking of using filter socks instead of the fluidized sand but other than that I think ill use everything else. I was going to display the sump/rufugium. so I was looking for something that was esthetically pleasing along with functionality. I built a stand for the main tank and incorporated a stand for the sump/rufugium. here is the stand and tank. still need to get a 55
