Building a 55g sump fir my new 210g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So one more question, how do I go about matching flow rates coming in and out of the tank and sump? This is confusing to me. Thanks for all the help.
Remember my tank has 2 inputs and 2 outputs from the 2 overflows.

I've been using a 1 1/2 inch flow valve. Got it from Amazon for $38.
Your 55 gal. might be tight, valves are pretty big. But u can tee your 2 inch PVC to a 2 inch valve. Then get a return pump that flows the rate u want. Use a by pass ball valve to fine tune flow

Sorry I forgot to mention that I decided to use my 80g for this project.

Could you show me what you are talking about?

1 pump does it all (2 pumps are not needed with an overflow).
Water is pumped to the tank from the sump, and overflows send water back to the sump by gravity.
This way there is no need to match pumps, the only thing to worry about, is that your overflows are open enough to handle the flow from the pump.
Or that you throttle the gph back enough so the pump does not overflow the tank.

Above is a PVC ball valve throttled back about 40%.
Your tank, and its overflows should be able to handle whatever you give it within reason.

Exactly what duanes said.
Except I use float valve because I've got only 3/4 in PVC ( x2) going to my sump and a drip running 6 gals per hr. So to be safe, float valve will close if my sump get too full
