Building a 620 gallon acrylic stingray tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great build, have you done some approximate costings of the tank?

Nice, when do you plan to have it completed?

That is one huge tank. Does anyone want to help me unload it out of my truck?

Richard (rdbrown) definately knows how to work with acrylic. This has turned out to be one great looking tank.

Now to unload it, level it and do a water test.

Here is the second tank of the two 620 gallon tanks. This one is mine.

Side view of the tank. Notice the tops on the two ends are 16" wide. The overflows are going in under those tops. The tops will be routed out above the overflow boxes to access the plumbing.

Inside the Overflow boxes

I picked up a used 180 gallon glass tank that I will be converting into a sump for this tank. I hate water evaporation, so I am going to completely cover the top of the sump. To make it easier to access the sump for maintenance I am going to drill the top of each end of the sump and let the water from the tank enter from the sides dumping directly into a 7" filter sock. After the water passes through the filter sock it will flow under a baffle and overflow into a second filter sock. Again it will flow under a baffle then over a baffle through a set of bubble traps then into the center of the tank that will be filled with bio-media. I set up the baffles around the filter socks so that when the socks get clogged the water will overflow into the next chamber over the top without overflowing the sump. I don't plan on using micron socks, just straining socks as I am going to push the water out of the center of the sump through a Purex Triton Nautilus FNS 36 Diatomaceous Earth Canister Filter using a Dolphin 3500 Pump. From the DE Filter it will pass through a 72 watt UV Sterilizer back into the tank. The DE Filter should be able to filter down to .5 microns.
