You need more than just duckweed and lettuce or hyacinths to filter

not really if the sump is 15-25 % of the total water volume have a nice steady flow up through a bed of gravel then to some fast growing plants like said above this should be more than efficient :D

If you have a clay siol it may be strong enough to put a liner in a hole.
I have a fine sand soil with no strength so I used cinder blocks and covered them with plastic foam to protect the liner from the cinder block. It has been working well for 10yr.

Dig a 10x8x2' hole. Put 2" sand in whole bottom. Build a cinderblock wall as high as you want it deep (using mortar) starting at the bottom of the hole. Toss in a liner and cap with pretty stones to hold the liner in place. Get a savio filter (the one that looks like a 55 gal drum) and a 4000 gph pump. Or - since you know horses - go get one of those 8' diameter horse troughs and bury it halfway.
What the hell kind of huge blind dog have you got? I'd be more worried about the horse falling in.
