Seeking some insights from P keepers here - especially those who kept multiple Pygos in the same tank before.

I am thinking of getting 2-3 Pirayas and then adding more RBPs around them as a comm.

Let's say the size difference will be Piraya being larger by 2-3 inches. Will this be safe for the Pirayas?

Due to the fact Pirayas cost an arm and leg over here - I would rather having them cannibalising the RBPs than the other way round. LOL!

Understand Cariba will be too risky due to their aggression; so I am leaving them out for this potential plan.

Sincere thanks in advance and have a great weekend. :)

OP, are you asking if the pirayas are 2-3 inches larger than natts, will this be safe for the pirayas or natts? Just a bit confused how larger pirayas are unsafe with smaller natts especially being 2-3 inches larger..

Yes. I am looking at safety for the Pirayas (due to the price difference) and hence will keep their size bigger than RBP.

Being a newbie in Piranha keeping - not too sure about the species level of aggression despite the size difference.

Hope the guys here can enlighten me on this.

Pygos whether they are natts, caribes, or pirayas don't discriminate. If it happens it will happen. But like you are implying, I think the chances of losing natts will definitely be higher compared to losing the larger pirayas due to cannibalism.

Thanks a lot for the info.

The reason this question popped in my head was reading that Cariba is the most aggressive amongst all Pygos.

I was concerned if the level of aggression differs between these 3; then some nasty fights or cannibalisation may occur more frequently.

First of all what size tank are these guys going in that will help determine numbers and as far as caribe being the most aggresive...i dont believe that....its mostly on individual fish but i would say reds majority of the time arent as aggressive as caribe piraya or terns

These will probably go into one of my 300 Gal as I will probably transfer the ATFs to a 8 footer FGT in about a couple of months.

I am thinking of building a Pygos comm around the 2-3 Piraya, maybe the same amount of Cariba and couple more RBPs.

Ternetzis are next to impossible to find here at the moment and probably the cost will be overly prohibitive.

In a 300 with 3 piraya i would prob go 3 caribe and 3 reds as well depending on footprint

Should I worry too much about cannibalisim if I start the grow out with 3 juvenile Pirayas first?

Obviously more would be better but it is abit pricey over here for me to start off with half a dozen. LOL!

Would it help if I add one or two similar size dithers to disperse possible aggression? The grow out tank will be 50 gal 3 footer.

Once the Pirayas get to a bigger size, will add in smaller RBPs and Caribas.

Piraya will outgrow caribe and reds so i would grow them all out at the same time....

What size are u getting them at?

Also what is the foot print of the 300?
