Building a Pygos comm - Advise needed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Pirayas are available at about 3 inches.

Cariba batch was told will be smaller at 1.5 inch.

RBP, being quite common to find here - I might add them in later at close to adult size - 8 to 10 inches. (When the Pirayas and Caribas have grown larger).

The 300 will be either a 6 x 3 or 4 x 4.

You might just need to manage the space with 9. The piraya can get huge. They will get to 16-18in, and the caribe can get to 13-14in I believe. All depends how long you plan on keeping them. There was a member with 8 piraya in a 800g and they made the tank look small. His smallest piraya was 15in and largest was 20in.

If the 3 piraya are at 3 inches and the 3 caribe are at 1.5 i would divide the tank let them grow out a little then cohab them when they are around 6 inches

At 3 inches and 1.5 i wouldnt risk it

Red Aimara Red Aimara youre gonna have quite the monster fish collection at your place aren't ya? Haha

LOL! Just got poisoned by Piranha recently bro. :)

I'd hope to keep 3 main comm tanks further down the road. Wolves, ATFs and Pygos.

Trickiest is probably the ATF - we both read and seen enough what they do to each other at a certain size. Probably might end up with just the GATF if I can get him to over 2 feet in size.

The wolves comm - fingers crossed that the Aimara doesn't turned into a serial killer later on. Other than that, things may just work out fine.

Are you keeping Piranhas also bro? Seen your beautiful rays and characins. Shanghai is probably one of the best place to get all the available species. :D

Haha nice, looks like you got it all figured out. I actually do have a piranha tank.. A Peruvian high back rhom that I grew out from a baby. Currently housed with a school of exodons in a heavily planted tank with driftwood. Right now it's only 5-6" and grows really slowly lol. I'll make a post about it.

Wolves/ATF/piranha.. Looks like you have a fascination for teeth like me. Haha

My future plans is probably a giant monster setup primarily for possibly high end bd stingrays with a high end red, snow or albino aro along with my characins. Has to be big enough that I can have two dividers that seperate them during pregnancies. Other than that, I want a dedicated driftwood/hard scaled tank for a beastly aimara with green neons. Maybe a couple more tanks for nurseries and quarantine tanks. This all comes down to when I do my planning to renovation of the basement to get all the plumbing structured and setup. I currently have too many tanks spread across which is taking up too much time for me to maintain. I have so much work to do on the regular and also a gf that's not the most supportive of the hobby. LOL

Thanks bro.

What if the Caribas come in at 2.75 inches and the Piraya at about 3 inches. I had ordered 1 Piraya and 3 Caribas and they will be arriving soon.

It is better to:

1. Grow them all up separately. Only comm together once they hit 5-6 inches mark. (How long will it take to reach that size?)

2. Put together since the sizes don't differ too much.

3. Grow the Piraya separately while keep the Caribas together.

Once again. Sincere thanks in advance.

Add: if I choose to comm them together at this size, would a driftwood be beneficial to create pockets of territory for them to avoid cannibalisim or fights?

Red Aimara Red Aimara , just add some driftwood in my opinion. you have more than enough space in a 300 while they are young. I have a friend here who has a bunch of piranha sp in one comm tank (manueli, rhom, mac, piraya, rbp, etc) I didn't think it could be done but he always has feeders in the tank and I guess he does a lot of water changes. that's something I wouldn't advise but in your situation, don't overthink it. :)

I'll be growing them out in a 60 gal first.

As with other comm tanks - was thinking of some monos or silver dollars as dithers too.

It will be great if you can get some pics or a video of your friend's piranha comm. That will be an amazing scene definitely.
