i would put them on the back. My reason is very simple, if power goes out it only drains to the height of the overflow. If there on the bottom, it drains until theres no water left to drain. You usually put the overflows about 2-3 inches from the top to prevent this problem when the power does go out. thats what ive always done anyways

i had a misshap when the power whent out and flooded my floor so i added a bilge pump and a deep cycle battery and a solar pannel to cure the problem

WOW! thats a heck of a cure...why not just redrill in the correct location? Must be a very ideal set up for you to want to keep it in that configuration after it flooded.
