Thank you for your post.
I am very sorry that your friend has suffered such a terrible injury.
I was injured initially in a motorcycle race at age 19 and actually recovered from the spinal injuries.
Intent on wanting to join the wheelchair hobby I was injured again at age 21
suffering permanent paralysis from T3/T4 (armpits down) and minimal paralysis of my left arm from a C5/C6 injury. The left arm was only effected with less than normal feeling and less strength than the right.
I am from a middle class family and have only a small amount of university
education (no degrees).
I received no insurance money from my injuries, lottery wins or inheritances.
I have my home, and fish and bird collections from working and saving (acquired while in the wheelchair). I ironically sold motorcycles for a living my entire working life after being injured.
I saved a lot of money over the years by not smoking or drinking (social perhaps if 0 to 4 beers a years qualifies) and being a mature saver a fortunate habit I learned as a child with a paper route.
I joined several social groups and a sport club after being injured and this allows/allowed me to travel, attend fish club conventions and compete (basketball, swimming, track) around my country and many countries in the world (basketball....I was never a good player but smart enough to play on a good team so nobody noticed). I also got into the management of my w/c basketball team and this continues to allow me to enjoy the company of amazing athletes when they attend our international basketball tournament and manage their website.
I can no longer play or travel much due to further deterioration of my left wrist and hand.
Your friend appears to be blessed with a very good attitude and true friends.
He can live a very full, independent and rewarding life if he approaches the disability as being an inconvenience instead of a handicap.
my best wishes,
