Building new sump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a herbie overflow, I would rather not change the settings on the valves. Also, I can just turn of my pump and let things settle. When I do my WCs that's what I do, turn off the pump and heaters and change the sock, but I would like to be able to change the sock without turning it off.

Finished the sump, ended up using the 50g lizard tank as the base for it.

I made a plate to set on top of the 7" filter sock holder to use my 4" ones until the new ones arrive from McMaster Carr.

I had to remove the door, cut a notch in the front, and remove two 2x4 supports to fit the thing in.

The part I had made to put the inlets doesn't work, i think there's just too much room taken up by both the 1" inlet tubes, the water comes out too quickly and shoots over the edge. I think I will T the drain lines into one 1" tube. I'll just wait until my 7" socks get here to do that.

This makes easy changing for my setup. Hang the socks from chain cable whatever. Plastic chain would be nice but cost is more than cheap stainless.

Please explain the triangle pieces of glass on the filter sock side of the sump? What's the purpose of that?

+1

My guess is that's where the water was going to exit and then over flow into the socks but it seems the OP decided not to.

I must have missed this part:screwy:

New socks came in, the 7x16" McMaster-Carr dual 100/50 micron. I haven't had water without some sort of particles floating around, until now! I just need to get some pot scrubbies to fill up the remainin space in my wet/dry chamber, this sump has 2x the bio capacity as the last one. Picked up a piece of 1/8" acrylic and spent a bit of time drilling a ton of 1/16" holes every 1" in it. Works like a champ though. Sump is a tad noisier, but with the doors closed it's barely there.

Now I just have to move all this crap somehow when I get my new apartment (divorce, ugh.....)
Good times......
