Buildup caused by airstone

I am wondering what you guys run out there to reduce the amount of buildup on tank rim from the bubbles from the air stone. I am tired of cleaning the glass top, since the bubble accumulate on top and started to grow algae being so closed to the light.

Not to mention the calcium and salt (I ran mine with a bit of rock salt) buildup on top of the rim of the tank.

Are there any ways to do this without the excessive build up ?

Not really. I just wash it off with white vinegar every water change. I have actually removed my airpump and gave it to my grandma. She loves it on her tank. I think that without the air bubbles, the tank looks more natural.

I suspended my lights to help reduce the amount of build up on the glass it did a bit ..
To clean it i just use a scotch brite pad and water with every water change.
 
I too got rid of my air pumps and rely on filtration for aeration as well. I like how it looks without it too. Besides it was just an extra plug and tube that got in the way.
 
HOBs and powerheads are much better for aeration. If you like the look of the bubbles, just keep up on the maintainance.
 
If you want to try an experiment, stretch a piece of nylon (or panty hose) across the top of the tank where the bubbles come up (pop). It's ok is it sags a little, just so it doesn't touch the water. this will shield the glass/light.

now what the hell do you call those things you attach to the powerhead to make those bubbles....:confused:

I'd much rather use a powerhead to move the water's surface, minus the venturi valve blowing bubbles everywhere. The tank looks cleaner without tinny bubbles in the water and I don't have to scrub the tops as often as when using an air pump.
 
air tube and nozzle?

i would rather break up the surface of the water as I don't have a skimmer or weir.
