Just was curious if anyone buys Bulk foods, and more spcifically Krill? Where do you get these? Secondly, I know some people on here buy packaged silversides, my question is, is there any small market fish that you buy that would be a whole lot cheaper then the LFS, if so what do you buy? Thx, in advance.....

You might find this of interest<http://www.fao.org/docrep/003/W5911E/w5911e08.htm>.

Murex is either in Canada or British Columbia.

If you're just looking for protein almost any fish will do. If you're looking for protein with a high color content, carotene, small shrimp are far superior to fish.

It's also kind of dependant on the size of the fish you're feeding. A larger Jurense, like in your avatar, would probably prefer more mass to real small stuff. If you were feeding something with a small mouth, like a hi-fin banded shark, ghost shrimp, or frozen krill would be my choice. For fry, I'd use frozen prawn eggs.

Re bulk foods: lowering the price per pound doesn't benefit you if you can't use it all before the nutritional quality is gone. Get some friends to go in with you and split the cost, dividing the portions to a more manageable amount. Freeze-dried products need to remain dry, stored in a tightly sealed jar. I'd feed from another container only opening your stock to refill the container. I'd also use a dark-colored jar and store in a cabinet with doors, in order to keep the food in the dark.

Re silversides: from my experience people that use silversides are trying to imitate the movement of live foods to wean their pets to frozen vs live. You could cut a meaty fish in strips to accomplish the same thing.

You get what you pay for...sometimes. Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's better. Frozen foods like brine shrimp are sometimes watery with little meat, one brand. Another may have much less water and a competitive price. Ask your LFS what they use and on what. They'll probably grab some from the freezer and show you. If they grab the expensive stuff have them tell you why they choose that one over others. Dan

I looked at jehmco.com and kensfish and it is still very hard to beat drsfoster&smith I can get hikari krill for $7.50lb adn shipping is a flat rate of $20.00!! Jehmco was rediculous on shipping and actually made the savings on the food obsolete compared to dr's. I should mention you have to buy 6 or more packs for the savings.

I bought a bag of Purina Gamefish Chow and most of my fish love it. It is obvious that they still prefer Hikari but the cost difference is that of night and day. 50 lb of PGFC is $17, or $.34 per pound. I have been paying $8.75 per pound for Hikari. The difference is clearly not worth it. A 50 lb bag of Hikary pellets would cost $437.50
