Im just wondering how common bulkhead failure is......I want to drill the back of my 300g to run a closed loop, rather than running pvc over the top, but not if Im risking 300 gallons of water on the floor. Any other recommendations?

I've had drilled tanks with bulkheads for going on 8 years now and have never had one fail on me or spring a leak. :)

Bulkhead failures are from error. If you are worried about one failing switch to schedule80 fittings, they are alot thicker.

The only issues that have ever happened to me is from initial setup. You know, a dirp here and there because it wasn't tight enough. But once they were on, no problems.

Ok, thanks guys, I just wanted to be certain first.

Ya they don't just fail, tighten them well and make sure all is well with the gasket and they are never a problem.

I agree, just plain gasket thats supplied, make sure the surfaces are smooth and clean and tighten till it seals. I had a drilled glass with bulkheads and i drilled my own acrylic and added bulk heads a few times and have never had any issues besides the initial tightening
