Anybody got some good links/manuf for bullet proof check valves? This is for those tanks that have returns plumbed through the bottom. need something better than those cheap plastic check valves they sell at lowes/HD, cause if one fails, all the water is going out of the tank when the pump goes off!

thx :)

What diameter are you looking for?

i'm thinking about 1"...

I would say that such a thing doesn't exist.

Then even if a compnay claimed it was foul-prrof, I wouldn't rely on it to not flood my sump.

IMHO, better to have a sump that can handle a full power down situation than risk it.
400g sump for a 400g tank????? LOL. i know every man-made product is bound to fail at some point, i just want one that will take longer to fail ;)

Somebody makes one, I promise. I'm sure they will be asking a pretty hefty sum of $$$ for something like that, though. There's gotta be another way to accomplish that for less money...

GEORGE FISCHER, Chemtrol (Nibco), and Hayward are all top notch. A 1" true union pvc check valve with EPDM seats is about $50. same with Viton seats is $45.

I can get them local for you if you want them.

sweet, thx bro. i just looked and the chemtrol ones and they look rock solid. do all these work with some sort of "ball" inside the check valve that closes the seal?

Get a good brass check valve. You can get one at any plumbing supply house. They are constructed of much higher quality materials than the plastic ones. I've had plastic ones fail, but never one machined of solid brass.

The Chemtrol is a Ball check valve. if you have a shop vac, pop the filter off and thats about how one of these works. There is a free floating ball that unseats to allow flow in one direction, when there is a backflow the ball seats in the fitting. I recommend the true union, that way you can disassemble it to inspect it as part of regular maintenance.

An other option would be a Y-pattern piston check valve. If you dont have the space in-line for the true union a y will take up less space but still allow you acces to check it as regular maintenance.
