most hooks made these days just rust out eventually i have pulled way to many bullheads stomach out trying to remove the hook...

Hooks only rust in water, not in digestive tracts. Ask Zoodiver about that one.

Nice read! I've often considered the possibility of grabbing a little bullhead. Making me want one again.

I just impulsively ordered a yellow bullhead from a breeder in Florida. I've kept brown bullheads in the past. Unfortunately, I didn't pre-plan for this guy enough. I'll have a large tank with undergravel filtration set up in a week or so. The cat is 4" long. Can I maintain him with water changes using dechlorinator a 10 gal tank in the interim? So far he's not taken pellets or cut up nightcrawlers in the 6 days I've had him here. I realize I screwed up, but what can I do in the interim to maintain this guy? I put a grown shiner in the tank, but the cat seems to be a rosey eating kinda guy. Didn't take the worm parts or pellets in the 6 days he's been with me. Will introduce guppies tomorrow. I'll have a corner filter or at the least a sponge filter in place in the next 12 hours, but did I terminally screw up?

I would't put any food in for a few more days, then reintroduce the bullhead to the earthworms, no way the bullhead can deny a worm for to long.

I used to catch babies and keep them for a year then release them. They grow so fast. Mine would grow from 1 inch to 6 in a matter of as many months. I fead them guppies, then rosies then goldfish with various foods supplimenting their diet. These fish can be terrors. Probably the most aggressive catfish for the size I've ever dealt with. I've had to remove turtles and many other such durable tank mates because the bullhead will either bully or try to eat them. In a feeding frenzy I had some latch onto a mud turtles legs. They are the pirana of the catfish world.

Nice article, I have one right now that is about 1 1/2 inchs, super curious, eats like a cow and they are awesome when they get big!

It depends on what kind of hook is used, stainless steel hooks probably last forever and will be found as odd little fossils in future Milena. I specifically use hooks that rust easily when I fish, everyone should stop using stainless steel hooks....

I agree.....I quit using both stainless steel hooks and lead weights. I know use cheap hooks and expensive steel weights!
