Bullhead Catfish tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great. I love when things are consistent. The only caveat is that neither BullDovii nor Duncan mentioned what bullhead species they report about. There could be differences for different species, but may be not? That may be the next level of learning.

The larger bullhead I mentioned was a yellow and the smaller one that I currently have is a black bullhead.

From what I've seen the yellow had a temper and would stand up for his self. The black has always avoids confrontation.

I also wanted to mention that the black has a much smaller mouth compared to a yellow of the same size.

Small Brown or Yellow Bullheads often have that "speckeled" pattern to them... they get up to 18 inches long; that being said the Yellow Bullheads my friend Richard has are in with some Texas Cichlids (3, 5-6inch texas cichlids in with 2, 7inch bullheads in a 75g) and hes never had any problems. If you provide cover (driftwood and plants) and keep them well fed, I doubt youll have any problems.

If it can fit it in its mouth it can eat it. Doesn't mean it will, but it can. Some catfish are definately more predatory than bullheads, live may not be their first choice but push comes to shove and they are hungry all bets are off.

My brown bullhead is about 10 inches. He's very territorial and will hammer anything that gets near him. He routinely latches on to my huge American Eel, and has gotten hold of my LMB. He always lets go before it gets crazy, but he does not put up with drive byes. That said, I almost think he just tries to eat anything that gets near his mouth. Once he realizes it's too big, he lets up. He's destroyed 3-5 inch comet goldfish though... several times. He hangs out in a log and the comets go there to hide from the Bass - as soon as they get in front of him he wastes them. I wouldn't keep smaller fish with him because he's such a jerk... but smaller fish wouldn't survive the bass to begin with so......
