bullhead catfish

I have a 12" brown bullhead, that comes out at feeding time. He also comes to the glass to see me up close when I am at the tank.

I have a Yellow Bullhead about 16" long in a 300. Never see him except feeding time. He puts away about 3 frozen jumbo shrimp a day. Tankmate is a bowfin about same size. He eats a lot more than 3.

Yes Ive heard of them getting that big before.....especially if you have a big enough tank or pond, wikipedia " The yellow bullhead may grow to 18 inches and weigh up to 2 pounds and sometimes more." Petersons also says the max size is 18inches.

According to the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame - Here are the All Tackle Records for Bullheads:

Black Bullhead = 8 lbs, 15 oz
Brown Bullhead = 6 lbs, 2 oz
Yellow Bullhead = 6 lbs, 4 oz

So they can get bigger then what the Petersons guide says. Many State records are bigger also.

Yes, but most fish dont get near the record sizes. A typical yellow bullhead will reach around 12-14".

Sorry for the delayed response. The bowfin and the yellow bullhead get along fine. They are close to same size and are the only large inhabitants of their 300 gal tank. Both were purchased from snookn21 earlier this year or late last year. The bullhead hasn't put on any real length, but is as big around as my forearm now. The bowfin rules the tank and has put on a few inches since purchase. Had some initial problems with feeding dead, but a long fast helped. It just got too expensive to buy hundreds of minnows and goldfish at a time. The two ate about 500 gold shiners in 2 weeks.
I would post pics but am technologically handicapped neo-Luddite. Having a camera would help too. The tank is an outdoor display at our motel. Maybe I can get my wife to take a few pics and I'll have her post them.
