bullheads dying

Did you keep it aerated or was it frozen for long periods of time?
The waterfall was there and the OP said his pond was open all year.

Bullheads are not that active in cold winters so they do not eat very much. Generally most pond fish especially goldfish and koi do not eat much in the winters.
 
I live in northern Minnesota, on the north shore of Lake superior, we get temps that are extremely cold, negitive 30 etc etc windchills at negitive 50 F, bullheads are one of the most hardy fish you can find, maybe the most hardy fish i'm aware of around here, hard for me to think they are going to die from just living in your pond for no reason other than it got cold
 
That sucks, maybe take in a few next time. Bullheads are awesome fish. I caught a tiny half inch black bullhead and raised it to 7 inches. Ate from my hand and would even swim under my hand to be pet. But it got too big for my tanks at the time so I put it in my little turtle pond, ended with half a fish:(
