Getting a South American Bumble Bee Catfish in the next few days for my 55g is there any details I should know about them, just trying to opinions from the experienced.

It's a very common name, applied to too many fish. Please, specify the genus and the species, if you will.

By default it usually means the small cat that grows to 2"-3" max. These are unfussy, flying around, eating machines at feeding. Other than that, chances are you will never see them - they come out only in pitch dark.

Then there are those that are called the same name that grow to 3'.

I keep these. I find they like small groups of 3-5. They will hide all the time and can easily easy smaller fish(i have had them eat 2" peacock cichlids). Cool fish.

also note being catfish though small... they will eat anything that fits into their mouthes... I had 2 that would eat any fry my platies/mollys produced that I didn't put into a net breeder ( they are great for livebearer tanks if you don't want to be over-run by babies.

They do prefer to be in smaller groups I believe I have to get more for my one bumble bee cat. Saw one once at the LFS it was like a golden yellow not the average for $30 had to pass, wish I didn't. Mine common one pretty much ate all my convict fry only 2 survived to grow to almost a juvie. Cool smaller fish though.

Yep, only get 2-3" cute lil' buggers. hearty and eat about anything mine actually really liked the NLS thera A formula, frozen bloodworms, and live blackworms... but they are scavenegers and eat just about any meaty food. I actually lost mine when we had the ac go out in the middle of summer and the tank got into the 90's.

Ive got 3 of the bigger ones, biggest is around 4 inches. and yep you will never see them- unless you catch them by surprise with the room lights. Actually thats not entirely true, 1 of mine I can see all the time, but only cus the mouth of his cave faces the front of the tank... I didnt actually get them myself, my dad got them around 3 years ago and he was wondering why all his neons and guppies were vanishing overnight!!! So i ended up with them. They are cool fish though, just dont really see them. mine each have their own cave, dont really socailise amongst themselves that i can tell. They eat pretty much anything, the one with the visible cave will eat anything that ends up in his cave- or anything i direct in there. If the lights are on though he wont come out for it, even if it is less than an inch outside the entrance

I've been planning on a thread dedicated to mine. I have a male and female and have bred once. One I know for sure is about 10 or more years old and the other I wouldn't know for sure. Sprity little buggers and very good eaters! I never see them so its like I have a empty tank haha!
