Bumble Bee Grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They're are Goliath groupers.. They get absolutely huge, but not bigger than other species like potato groupers.

They don't make good aquarium pets because of the size.

Why then do you have one?

From what I've seen there are two species from the Epinephelus genus that grow to ridiculous sizes:

Epinephelus lanceolatus- Common names= Bumblebee Grouper, Queensland Grouper or Giant Grouper (Unfortunately for these fish, they are more colorful than the itajara, with their bright yellow and jet black juvenile coloration that they lose as they mature).

Epinephelus itajara- Common names= Goliath Grouper (formerly known as the Jewfish)

Both of these species can grow to several hundred lbs.

What's your plan if the public aquariums can't take him?

Oh no! The Fish Police are out already. Didn't even take 24 hours....

I "rescued" the animal from a 100 gallon aquarium. The original owner did not know much about him. He is now living in a 700 gallon tank with a new owner.
That person has already transferred several of his previous animals to public aquariums in the past including the Houston aquarium on his own dime.
I've done my part. The rest will be up to him.

I simply though folks might enjoy seeing some photos of his juvenile colors shot with a real camera instead of your typical iPhone snap shot.
If not, let me know and I will refrain from causing anyone additional angst. Too many folks out there ready to rush to a judgement when they know nothing about the situation.

I dont think anyone is attacking you. You said that you rescued the fish from a hundred-gallon tank... so you can understand, and have seen first-hand, that some people just arent cut out to keep fish. It's that kind of thing that causes people to jump to the defense of a fish in question... not a shot at you, just doubt towards people in general, I guess.

Good job on the rescue and good luck in finding a home for this guy down the road, awesome looking fish, please, keep us posted!

I have seen them say it gets to the size of a volkswagen so that would make sense.. that's awesome though, how did you come across a protected marine specie like that?

they are uncommon in the exotic fish hobby if you know the right people.
