bumping up gph on sump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you could.. however it wont really do much.. in order to have enough plants to keep nitrates in check you need a lot of fast growing plants...

all of my tanks have live plants in them.. the only tank that ever gets below 20ppm of nitrates (how it comes out of the tap) is the planted 55 which most of the time looks like this... which looks nice and all.. but theres so many plants there no room for fish..
if i stop doing waterchanges on this tank it holds at 0, 0, 10.. the longest ive gone is 5 weeks without a water change.. only reason i went that long is because i wanted to see what would happen.. it gets biweekly 50% WC

so.. yeah.. yer best option is to just step up the water changes..

thanks. thats a nice tank. ya that is what i figured i would have to do. would scrubbies still help will mechanical filtration if i put them in the bottom of the sump.

ya i know about the farm stuff but there is no nitrates in the water. i have to filter my water with a pur 3 stage filter to help with chimicals in the water, lost a few fish when i moved over here. sucks but its only thing that works for now. ya i didn't know about the filters.
Is this an RO unit? Do you use straight RO water? Do you buffer it? RO water has no PH which causes the nitrogen cycle to be very ustable.

You could do some plants that can grow unrooted, java fern or anachris it won't matter if your oscars throw them around

I've heard of people growing duckweed in their sumps but it strikes me as a mess waiting to happen.. If you just need to clean up your water consider putting stuffing a sump chamber with poly fill or using micron bags.
