Tomorrow i have the chance to pick up 2 5gal buckets of Bunker sand. It's coming from a golf course in my area. I'm not sure exactly what kind but he says its "top of the line silica sand." I guess its a cedar color.

First question, Do you think it will be safe for my EBJD? And second, will that be enough fo a 55 gal?

Silica sand is fine for fish. It should give you a good half inch layer or less maybe. Enough to cover the bottom at least. Just wash it well before putting it in.

The bunker sand was terrible. I think it was play sand, and silica mix to make it that cedar color. It never came clean. The local home depot had 30 grit white silica sand. 100lbs for $8. But it is like powder.
Went to local pool supply and picked up 50lbs of filter sand for $10. Brilliant!! Only about 3 hours of rinsing till clear water woot!
