Ouch that sucks. Keep your head up. I hate all in-tank heaters so much. I've had to deal with and seen so many horrors caused by submersible heaters. Hydor makes inline heaters that are easily attached to canister filters. They have a sealed heating element that never comes in direct contact with the water so no chance of frying your tank as well as not being a hazard or eyesore in your aquarium.

Another plus is if you have the ehiem plumbed thru the bottom you can leave it and the heater on during water changes to prevent huge temp swings!

oh dude... well if it makes you feel better (this isnt a pity me im just telling a story of my greatest loss ) i put one to many caps of melachite in my SW tank lost my cleaner shrimp,a coral beauty angel a sleeper goby and five peppermint shrimp.

losses happen to the best of us ( wich im far from!) it just sucks when it could be avoided. my sympathy. i feel your pain.
