Back in action!
I'm getting a holiday payout this week and it's already burning a hole in my pockets, lol. What to do, what to do, what to do...

Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR?

Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 D?

Nikon 300 f/4?

Upgrade to D700?

Pick up D90 as second body?

Common sense dictates to buy into lenses. I like the FX part of the D700 and the HD part of the D90 though.

The 70-200 f/2.8 VR is pricey and the 80-200 apparently gives me the same optics with a bit slower AF system....

The 300mm gives me reach and is the more affordable....

Or to go way out in left field, Canon 5D with a new price drop? Wow!

Choices, choices...

Canon 5D is not worth the money Gerry, if you were to go that way, Mark II ships this week, from what I understand, for only $700 more it's ridiculously better.

As far as the other choices, you have to figure out what you want to accomplish. Those longer lenses, do you plan to use them? I got a 70-200 once and got rid of it 6 months later, was not using it. They look so good until you realize you don't use them. What are you interested in doing most with it? If you dont need the length of 300mm, I really would recommend the VR version, as it improves the shots quite a bit if handheld. How about the wide range, you have something already? Are you interested in doing sunset shots, nature shooting, landscape? That may be a choice also. Upgrading the body for me is only an option when it's a BIG jump.

I'd like to go outdoors with a long lens. I have the 70-300mm G lens, and I think I could make use of a f/2.8 lens or the 300m f/4. I had some decent pics with the 70-300mm G, but I gave up a lot of detail in those pics.

I'm not keen on going wide or shooting architecture.

I have a Sigma 28mm f/1.8, nikkor 60mm f/2.8, nikkor105mm f/2.8 and a kit lens, the nikkor 18-70mm nikkor f/3.5-5.6. I also have the 70-300m G lens.

This is part of the process for me of discovering what I really want to do. Throw some ideas down in print and then ponder the possibilities. I do know for sure, I'd love to take my camera out of doors more often and go and explore with the camera and lens.

I can also pick up a new quad core mac with a 24" screen for the price of the 70-200mm. :)

my input is minimal since I use Canon... but my main shooting lens outside on the macro is the 70-200 2.8 non IS with a 1.4 if I need more reach. That lens is on my camera 90% of the time the owl shot I did is done with that lens.

I think Ed is the only person I have ever heard giving up the 70-200mm f/2.8. It is the perfect all around outside lens. The TC-17EII works great with my 70-200mm f/2.8 vr version and will give you the 340mm focal length without losing much (f/4.2).

If you decide to get really long, you can save up for the 200-400mm f/4 vr. That is also a fine lens. I played with one and have seen some nice eagle shots taken with it by a friend. Not quite as sharp as the 70-200 when you add a tc, but very close.

Since you have the D300 already, I would consider the D700 for your fx sensor body. Putting the new 12-28mm lens on it will give you a fantastic combination for wider use and weddings. You can put your 60mm and 105mm on it and get some great portraiture shots that will provide almost too much sharpness. Add the 85mm f/1.4 for the D700 and your arsenal would be complete imo.:-D

More suggestions to add to your dilema. ;)

what a great 'problem' to have!

i won't presume to advise you. if it were me, i'd upgrade my body. i had been lusting for a 1.7tc for use with my 70-200vr but now i think i'll save for a new body.

the lcd on my d100 is smaller than 2" and i honestly feel my eyesight suffers from using it! i'm targeting a d90 now. :-D

If you decide to stick with Nikon, here are the must have ...

- 70-200VR f/ 2.8
- 85 f/1.4
- 28-70 f/2.8 (* or new 24-70 f/2.8)
- 105 f/2.8
- 12-24 f/4 (* get 14-24 f/2.8 if you can afford)

First 3 will be well recognized in the history of Nikon !!! I can't live without them.
