I never had a tank burst yet but in sure eventually they wear out..probably loder poorly sealed tanks ,or uneven surfaces make it happen..Im sure alot of Homemade crap breaks..

Im gonna ask the obvious, and probably the only part of your wife's "freaking out" that you cared about: What fish were in the tank/did they survive?

The fish survived just fine but, had no where else to keep them and took a while to convince the wife it wouldn't happen again so, no new tank for a couple months. I had to sell a 2 1/2ft. fire eel that would eat out of your hand and some very large clown loaches that I had kept for about 5 years.

I'm definitely going to look and see if my insurance covers this and what it covers particularly. I was actually going to call earlier this week but got busy with Christmas. I need to stop putting it off.

tank never burst, BUT

I had an AC110 on my 125G while it was cycling, and I went home from my apartment for thanksgiving break. Came home a week later and I smelled something BAD outside the door of my apartment. Went in and looked in my bedroom and the tank was almost COMPLETELY empty. I thought it may have just been because of evaporation because I left the heat on. Then I heard the filter crunching. Oh ****.

Walked into the room and my wall to wall carpet was literally a pond.

Called a local cleaning company, and ends up one of the guys is a member of the Boston Aquarium Society. Cleaned and soaked up my whole room for $65!

That's the only major problem I've had. 100 Gallons of water soaked through my rug :D

A tank busted on me.. Luckly it was only a tem gallon.. But there was still water and rocks and fish everywhere.. I saved the fish though :)

Wow that's crazy cheap. What kind of cleaning company would clean something like that? Just a standard cleaning service or something more specialized?

I have had a total of three tanks leak. All were 72 bowfronts. The first was just dripping when I noticed it. No damage done. The second was a slow but stead leak. Again, I caught it before any damage was done. The third leak was not so simple. I came home a note on my door that read "Hi, I am your downstair neighbor. It is raining in my apartment. Please stop by anytime this evening". I opened my door and found water cascading from the bottom center of my tank. There were maybe 10 gallons of water left in the tank. Long story short, between shoddy contractors and restoration companies, I was out of my home for six months. The water spread through nearly every room. The drywall absorbed the water from the carpets. It was not pretty at all. Needless to say, I will never own a 72 bowfront again.

I remember when I was that age, I had to convince my mom that the tank wouldn't leak water all over the wood floor... two years after that, 30 gallons and all my stock were on the floor. I accidentally let go of a mop handle and it went right into the bottom corner. Funny now, but no so funny then.
yhea, cleaning up water in a hurry is no fun. lol.

i am seriously considering tearing down my 55g because of the slight chance it could break. The tank is held up by a stand thats uneven and the floor it sits on is uneven as well. i am so sad to do this, but i cant afford a risk like this right now.
