amazingly i did a search for this and found practically nothing. :( lets change that so at least one thread on here has information about these guys.

im trying to decide what to do with my 10 gallon once my community fish in it get transfered to the 20 long. would a butterfly fish be all right in one by itself? and if so, are there any special things i need to be aware of or will simply setting up the typical tank (substrate, bogwood, a few plants and lighting, filter, secure lid) be just fine? in other words...

1. will it be all right in a ten gallon?
and
2. care sheet please :)

honestly that will be one boring tank...if you are talking about the african butterfly fish. they mostly just float up at the top and i think then can get 4-6" they sometimes go midwater but not often. they eat just about anything and whatever live food they can get in their mouth.
this is all from memory so feel free to correct me if im wrong anyone.

Im pretty sure they can stay in a 10 for life they dont get much bigger than three inches from my research and stay at the surface. Im thinking about putting one my planted 55.

I wuz at a fish farm and saw some giant ones... they didn't seem like they would fit a 10gallon! but hey.. what do i know =) I just saw them for less than a minute... maybe MFK is affecting my eyes.. everything seem bigger! LOL~

thanks for the link, its got some decent info. unfortunately though it doesnt say minimum tank size, and im a little concerned about its pH readings. i know a lot of care sheets will say one thing but when it comes to reality most fish will adapt to whatever pH comes out of the tap so long as it is in between 6 and 8. anyone know if this fish is this way or should i get a pH buffer? and i dont mean to sound condescending here at all, i really do thank you for the info :) im just trying to be positive i have my facts straight before i bring a fish home. it would just rip me up inside to accidentally kill a fish because i wasnt responsible and didnt know how to properly care for it beforehand.

this site says a 60L (15.8gal) tank and ph of 6.5 and temp of 26c (78/79F)
" The water in the tank should be soft and slightly acid with tannin-stained water by the means of a 'peat sandwich' in a cannister or box filter. Similar results can be obtained by using 'blackwater' preparations. "

oh yea, they will jump out if they can, or so i have read.

wikipedia says:
Freshwater butterflyfish can be kept as pets in an aquarium of at least 30 gallons Other required conditions are a temperature of 75° to 85°F, a pH of 6.9-7.1, and a KH of 1-10.
