butterfly fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine takes bloodworms and flakes/pellets on occassion. He's housed with two ctenopoma acutirostre, 3 baby bichirs, and a tiny afro knife. He's fairly active compared to what I usually read. Doesn't go below water unless spooked, but is usually cruising around. Toss in a small cricket and he comes to life instantly.

also if your intent on breeding them the anal fin on the male is indented compared to that of the female, its kind of hard to describe but really apparent when you see a M and F side by side.

Thanks for all the info guys much appreiciated.

i have read somewhere that these guys dorsal (top fin) is used to sense the water for the ripples of splashing insects. is this true?

thanks again
Matt

just make sure u throw the crickets (thats what I feed mine) right in front of it or it wont see it.

Thanks for the input

i got my guy yesterday and has eaten frozen bloodworm. i have not had the chance to get some crickets yet but i will. When the lights go out he darts around the whole tank to about the middle.

Thanks for the help guys

I'm considering getting one this week...

I have some questions!

- could I put one in my 20g with 10 pygmy corydoras? They are bottom dwellers for the most part, so I don't see any problems...

- what sort of mid-level swimmer could I get with one of these; something that doesn't go to the top much?

Thanks!

20g is about minimum size for keeping these, they like swimming room. They won't bother the cories. I find that congo tetras do well with butterfly fish.
