MD...but all my fish are in japan still..lol
In my search for another butti, i have come accross this guy, labeled in the LFS as "tilapia sp" looks alot like my butti in the states when he was just a little guy. This one is about 1 inch or so. They couldn't confirm that it was a butti at the store. Any african experts here know for sure if it is? and if not, what else it could possibly be? Thanks in advance!!

Sure looks like a Butti to me!

The seaworld here in San Diego labels buttis as "Hornet Tilapias."

At such a small size I think this is their typical shape. If this fish was 4-5" I would definately agree with ethnics that the shape is all wrong. But I have seen a tank full of 30-40 Butti @ 1" that look consistent with this fish.
 
Thanks guys! I guess the only sure fire way is to wait until he gets a couple of more inches. Its been along time since my last one was this small but i remember him having this body shape and developing a more butti type shape at about 3 inches or so, also lost most of the gold coloration.
 
hmmm...looks like a butti to me...but its body looks too long...i could be a tilapia joka (those don't get that big), they kinda look like butti's when they are small and they are from africa too.

I think you may be right on this one, after looking at the pictures, its more likely to be t. joka. he's growing out in my sump, and its hard to get a good look at him now. eating like a monster though. Still would be nice if he turned out to be a butti. i miss my old one...lol.
Hey might only spend a week in guam this xmas. that way i can go back in Feb. Also if your interested we might try to go to singapore this spring. tickets from here are dirt cheap.
 
i have butti's from 1" to 3" and they all have the proper body shape already. this one has no body shape near any that i see regularly. even walmart has some butti's right now

Walmart? Oh boy, I wonder how many people who buy them really know what they are getting themselves into? :headshake
