buttikoferi and american cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is just a matter of time...

butterrkoferi can get NASTY , in addition to getting huge.. i think there growth rate is much faster than tradition africans

The butti will kill all your other fish soon after it acclimates.

I guess you gotta ask yourself if you're a really lucky guy or not. Are you the kinda person that always has a parking spot in front when you drive up somewhere? Do you buy lots of lottery tickets because you win half the time you buy scratch offs?

If you like tempting fate, and lucking out of the circumstances, then by all means, try to keep a Butti in a tank with a bunch of other fish with different levels/perceptions of aggressive behavior. See how it works out.

Post videos. :)

Butti are on par with red devils, once they outgrow the tank ruler they generally start making space!-) I've found them to ignore smaller fish, all my experience is in my 300g tho.

I gotta ask, not to be a jerk, but why you mixing south americans and central americans with africans anyways,

they are both cichlids but its like completely different water parameters, aggeresion, etc etc, ,go buy another tank and split the 2 worlds up, then youd be more likely to achieve longterm success
my 2 cents...
The parameters for the majority of fish in general doesnt matter much now. Back when everything was wild caught or just a couple generations tank-bred then it mattered. But most fish can get along with anything now, although breeding is another story.. And cichlids like these can surely tough out a minor difference. Not to argue, im just pointing out that a lot of fish have be en tank bred so long they arent even remotely needing of any specific water params.

The real question is conpatibility, which i give a solid no lol.

I agree with LogiBear that water parameters won't matter.
When you think about it, buttis come from large African rivers, and most of the other cichlids you mention come from large rivers in the new world, so water parameters are not that different anyway. It's not like the difference between the hard waters of African lakes and soft waters of the flooded Amazon rainforest.
But again buttis are loners following hippos, and eating their feces, they don't like any company that appears to be competition, unless the tank is 300 gallons or more.
