lake worth florida
im thinking about breading buttikoferi cichlids. I captured 6 juviniles from the wild(my lake) and i have a 125 gallon set up inwitch to breed them. i have never owned a buttikoferi before. i have not breed cichlids before but i gess i need to start some were. if anyone has ever breed buttikoferi cichlids before or has any advise on breeding cichlids it would be greatly apeciated

Put all 6 in the same tank; nature will do the rest. But you will need to seperate the pair once it's formed or you'll have a blood bath!!

My experience with breeding "nasty" fish is to introduce some type of "dither" fish. Another species that will take some of the aggression off the main species. With Buttikoferi I would use Mbuna, like zebras. Their small, sturdy, and fast. Hard for the bigger fish to catch! This would take some of the pressure off of the pair that will bond.

To the OP, your location says "florida" and Tilapia and Oreochromis species are either prohibited or restricted.

I read they are no longer banned in florida from what i understand..

Ur actually suppose to kill any caught tilapia. and release back into water. atleast in miami. my husband was correct....two years ago Too lol
