in the end i think it all ends up with every fish's individual personality right?

Yeah, to a point though. You would be ok until the butti hit around 5 inches, they are not mean at all when they are little, but they do get pushy when they get older, and lose color. I never had much luck with bigger cichlids and bichirs, the bichirs won't touch the cichlids, but the cichlids would try and peck at the polys, oscars do alright. On the other hand though my friend a few years back had 2jags, an oscar, a flowerhorn, a pictus and a big senegal all packed in a 90.(all full grown!) I wouldn't suggest something like that. lol But it was personality and we found that the flower pots placement was key! The flowerpot had to be in an exact spot otherwise it was a war zone. Doesn't hurt to try with a small butti, if it starts to get mean, trade him out or use it as an excuse for another tank, Like most mfkers. lol

i would want a colorful cichlid just one. what would be my best option? im no expert in cichlids and my only cichlid is a blood parrot hybrid.

Some of the africans would work, yellow labs, aceis, peacocks..ect. but I don't keep malawi cichlids they have never interested me.

Becareful, lots of people buy this fish of it's personality and it's great color..but when they get 4-6 inches..there will be no more tank mate's then people return them within the first or second week.try getting a female..their calmer..good luck

Some butties are peaceful when they are big, but most are killers. Read more threads on them and you'll see that some cichlid people think they're the most viscious cichlid on the planet! Ive kept a totally peaceful breeding pair (on their own) and ive also had killers that will kill EVERYTHING you put in, even much bigger aggressive cichlids.
As for colour, keep them in soft acid like they should be and they'll usually stay black and white, IME.

well ive already lost 3 8"-10" male butiis to my 16" ornate likes to try to take there head off....... i guess it all depends on the fish im looking at a 13" butii male that has killed off everything in his tank maybe this one can survive.......... if anything id add a wild oscar for some bichirs............

i have 2 of those in my african cichlid tank. one is very aggresive and attacks other fish and i had to transfer them to another tank with an albino oscar. the aggresive one killed the slightly bigger oscar and started attacking its brother so i put the gentle one back in my african tank. i notice hes considerably darker while the mild mannered one is more brightly colored. maybe he was a male?

You hit the nail on the head...it all depends on the disposition of the fish and the size of tank it is in...My butti happens to be pretty laid back...it's about 10" now.
