I have a 1 1/2inch Buttikoferi by itself in a grown out 35 gallon, would it be fine buy itself or do i need dithers? trying to grown this fish as healthy as possible.

They get nasty as hell so I would advise against tank mates in a 35. It will definitely out grow that tank sooner than you think also but a very cool fish none the less.
Keep it by itself and start saving up for a bigger tank. You will love it once it gets bigger...definately a fish that can hold it's own.
Absolutely a brute. When I had mine, I had him in with jags, green terror, Dovii, Red Devil, Convicts, wolf fish, Pike cichlids, etc.. Great fish and coexisted well with his tankmates. Had plenty of plants and hiding places, which helped lower their aggression. ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a ton. I'm well aware of how big he can grow to be. I just couldn't get him to eat yet. I've never started a tank with only 1 single fish. Was wondering if he need dithers to come out and play. And whats the best gravel color for this guy? black?
No you don't need dithers....he will do just fine. As he gets bigger he will show more personality...I have a big 12" female..she is quite the specimen...blinkmaster;4073727;4073727 said:

The only tankmate that I have seen zero aggression between it and my two Buttikoferi cichlids is an End. Bichir!
I would say, NO tankmates will survive in a 35 with that butti. My old butti would slam every cichlids ass to a corner even in a 125. I would save my money for a 180 or more VERY AGGRESSIVE FISH. Good Luck
