Would a single buttikoferi be a good choice for a single specimen 90gal.?

Yes but im sure you can get a more detailed opinion if you post in the african section as the fish in question is an african species.

you could probally add some more cichlids in there like a polleni

a butti would rip a polleni a new one IMO. Butti's grow very quickly while Polleni grow slow and are not as agressive as a butti.

Yeah Buttikoferi are mean SOB's. I had one tear a cichlid tank up once and it tripled in size in about 2 months tops. Very cool looking fish tho, and very agressive IME

Not sure what you could put in there with it, but it better be able to take a beating

my butts are so nice, i have them in my community 400gal and they can hold there own ground, but yet so casual.

There usually only aggressive if the other fish initiates the fight because i have one that is 6-7in. with 2-3in. fish and he dosent bother them at all
